Detective Conan’s 39th ending theme song will be sung by B’z. The song is entitled Pilgrim and is a song included in the Japanese hard rock duo’s 18th album, C’mon. The album will be released on July 27, 2011.

The song will be used in the Detective Conan anime from August 6, 2011 and will be used only for the month of August.

New Magic Kaito Anime Special

This week’s issue of Weekly Shonen Sunday (issue #33) is announcing a new anime special for Detective Conan. The anime special, entitled Detective Conan Special—Kaitou Kid Summer Festival: Kaitou Kid’s Busy Date, will air on August 6, 2011. The contents of the special are from Magic Kaito, another series by Detective Conan’s author Aoyama Gosho. Here is a brief summary of the anime special:

“Kaitou Kid, or Kuroba Kaito, sends out a warning card that he will steal The Angel’s Crown from the Treasures of the Medieval Period Exhibition. However, on the same day that he stated on the card, his classmate Nakamori Aoko makes him go out on a date with her. Aoko suspects that Kaito and Kid are the same person, and wants to confirm her suspicions.”

In addition, a second episode entitled The Royal Princess Likes Magic will air on August 13, 2011.
This is the second anime special of Magic Kaito, and spans two episodes this time. The first anime special, entitled The Secret behind the Birth of Kaitou Kid, aired in April 2010.

Conan with Live-Action Ran on SS Cover

Conan is on the cover of issue #32 of Weekly Shonen Sunday. This is the second time Detective Conan is on the cover of the weekly manga magazine this year, the first being issue #20 that was on sale in April. In line with the first Detective Conan live-action drama that premiered on July 7, Kutsuna Shiori who plays Mouri Ran in the drama is on the cover together with Edogawa Conan, the protagonist of Detective Conan.

Detective Conan OP #31 is 45th Number One Single of B’z

The 49th single of Japanese rock duo B’z Don’t Wanna lie, which includes Detective Conan’s 31st opening theme song of the same name, was released on June 1, 2011 and debuted at first place on Oricon’s singles sales ranking chart, selling 169,000 copies in its first week of release.

This is the 45th B’z single in a row to debut at number one on the chart. The rock duo’s first number one single was Taiyou no Komachi Angel, released in June 1990. Don’t Wanna lie has renewed the records of the most number of number one singles and the most number of consecutive number one singles, both of which were already held by B’z.

The song Don’t Wanna lie is the 31st opening theme song of the Detective Conan anime, and also the theme song of the 15th Detective Conan movie, Quarter of Silence. Sales of this single has kicked off to a great start, as it has sold 39,000 more copies than the 130,000 copies sold in the first week of B’z's previous single, Sayonara Kizu Darake no Hibi yo, released in April this year.

Detective Conan Live-Action Drama – Comments from Actors & Aoyama

As we (dcfc) have previously reported, Detective Conan will be adapted into its first live-action drama series. Named Thursday Mystery Theater – Detective Conan: A Challenge Letter to Kudou Shinichi, the drama will be aired on Japanese broadcasting networks YTV and NTV from July 7, 2011 onward. Following the television special that aired in April this year, Kudou Shinichi will be played by Mizobata Junpei, while Mouri Ran will be played by Kutsuna Shiori.

The Detective Conan manga by Aoyama Gosho started serialization in Weekly Shonen Sunday (published by Shogakukan) in 1994. An anime adaptation that started in 1996 celebrates its
15th anniversary this year, while the movies that have been released annually since 1997 have also gained great popularity. For live-action adaptations, there have been two television drama specials where Oguri Shun played Shinchi, and one television special where Mizobata Junpei played Shinchi.
The live-action drama series this time will be set three months before Shinchi turned into Conan. Each episode starts with Shinichi, well-known as a high school detective, receiving a letter that challenges him to stop a potential murder. Each case is resolved within one episode, and the drama will be targeted at adults. While the previous three television specials all had original storylines, materials from the manga will be included this time. The cast from the third television special is kept; Mouri Kogorou will be played by Jinnai Takanori, Kisaki Eri by Ohtsuka Nene, and Suzuki Sonoko by Akimoto Sayaka. In addition, another popular character—Shinichi’s rival, the great detective of the west—Hattori Heiji will have a live-action actor for the first time.

The drama series keeps the cast from the third live-action television special.

This is the first time in three years that Mizobata Junpei is taking a starring role in a drama series. “I’m more confident compared to three years ago, but I’m also more worried since the pressure on me is larger this time. There are a lot of fans of the original series, but I want to make this character my own, and let others think that Kudou Shinichi=Mizobata Junpei,” said the actor. “The highlights of this drama include the surprising sides of Kudou Shinichi, the daily lives of Shinichi and Ran, and many other things that couldn’t be included in a two-hour television special. It’s a late-night drama, but since it’s the summer vacation, I’ll try my best to make it a series that both adults and children can enjoy,” Mizobata said enthusiastically.
Kutsuna Shiori, who plays Ran, said many people approached her after the television special aired in April. “It really reminded me all over again just how popular Conan is. I’ll continue to play Ran in the drama series, and the pressure remains, but I’ll do my best!” the actress said, all set to give it her all.

“I’ve watched it—The Mystery of the Strange Bird Legend! Somehow it feels like a story from Kindaichi Shounen no Jikenbo(laughs),” said Aoyama Gosho, author of Detective Conan. “It’s true that Mizobata-kun is handsome and Shiori-chan is cute and pretty, but… I pointed to the screen lots of times, shouting “Hey, aren’t you guys a little too lovey-dovey?!” (laughs). In the manga, the relationship between the two hadn’t developed that far at that time, but well, I guess this version worked out too (laughs).” Besides commenting about the third live-action special, Aoyama also talked about his expectations for the upcoming drama series. “It’s the first drama series, but it seems like they’ll also be doing cases I wrote in the manga, so I’m really excited! I’d love to see Heiji in real life, but besides the Kansai accent, what’re they gonna do about the dark skin? (laughs)”

The Detective Conan drama will start on July 7, airing every Thursday at 11:58pm.

Detective Conan Live-Action Drama’s Theme Song by yu-yu

The theme song of Detective Conan’s upcoming live-action drama will be sung by yu-yu.
The title of the song is Kimi to Zutto… or With You Forever…, and the song is included in Japanese singer yu-yu’s single of the same name. The single will be released on August 24, 2011.

While yu-yu has previously released an album entitled Always, this will be her first single. The single bundles a CD and a DVD.

Detective Conan Live-Action TV Series Confirmed

More live-action Detective Conan coming up! And this time, it will be a full television series.

In the next issue (Issue #26) of Weekly Shonen Sunday, which will be on sale on May 25, 2011, there is a special announcement of a new live-action television series for Detective Conan. Previously, three television specials have aired, the first in 2006, the second in 2007 and the third just recently this year in April. However, this time, a full television series is in store. The television adaptation, entitled Detective Conan: A Challenge to Kudou Shinichi will start on July 7, 2011.

2011 Aoyama Gosho Interview

The next climax in the Detective Conan manga will be a showdown between ** and **? More Kaitou Kid soon? The answers to these questions are found in a recent interview with Detective Conan’s author Aoyama Gosho, conducted by the Japanese magazine Otona Fami and published in its June 2011 issue.

After 25 years as a manga artist, Aoyama talks about how he started this job and his various works Yaiba, Magic Kaitoand Detective Conan. He names the five episodes that he likes most in the Detective Conan anime and talks about the latest movie, Quarter of Silence. In addition, he reveals some spoilers about how the story in the Detective Conan manga will progress in the near future.

Interview with Aoyama Gosho
Aoyama Gosho, a man who has devoted himself to drawing shonen manga (manga targeted at young boys) for a quarter of a century. He talks about his life, from his debut as a manga artist in 1986, to Magic Kaito, Yaiba, and finally to Detective Conan, and also what holds in the future.

♦ What were you like as a child?
I was like the kids in the Detective Boys, and often went around exploring different places with my friends. Rather than being like Conan, I was more of a Mitsuhiko-type. I played the role of looking for supplies and places, and set a junkyard of a body shop in my hometown as our secret base.
♦ Did you already like manga back then?
Yes, I did. I kept drawing nyarome* back then. The first manga that I bought was Ore wa Teppei/I Am Teppei by Chiba Tetsuya-sensei, whom I liked a lot. Because I liked Teppei, I even joined the Kendo Club. However, my parents were strict and thought that “Nothing good can come out of reading manga,” so in my junior high and high school days, I had to read manga secretly.
Nyarome is a character that appears in manga artist Akatsuka Fujio's works.
♦ How did you become a manga artist?
As my parents were against it, I almost gave up on my dream of becoming a manga artist when I was in high school. Instead, I decided to become an art teacher and enrolled in Nihon University College of Art. There, I joined the Manga Studies Club that high schools in the countryside didn't have (laughs). There, I met the club's alumnus, manga artist Abe Yutaka-san (Kuma-chan no Christmas, Detective Conan Special Edition). When I was working for Abe-san as an assistant, he asked “Do you want to try drawing manga for real?” That was how it all started.
♦ On a side note, what was your major in college?
I took the course for painting in the department of fine arts. At the end of each Conan volume, the Great Detectives Pictorial Guide's image has a different touch (from the manga), right? I can still draw such pictures. I've even worked part-time as an artist before. I drew backgrounds for Fuji TV's Pon Kikki and Tokyo Disneyland's Pirates of the Carribean; I had to draw the bricks of a scene where the pirates wreaked havoc on the town. They gave me a lifeline and a photograph and asked me to draw according to it. Because the pay was good, I really tried my best to draw it (laughs). Sadly, the drawing is now gone. I have a teaching certificate too. I worked as a trainee arts teacher at a high school in my hometown. My parents thought I've become a teacher, so when I suddenly said I wanted to be a manga artist, they were against the idea, as expected. My father said, “Among my friends, there's a guy who can draw a crab that looks like it'll start moving at any time. But that guy can't make a living at all. Even when you know that, are you still gonna be a manga artist?” (laughs). But I declared that “I'm already a grown-up and I'd do things my way,” and brought my work to a publisher.
♦ It seems that you first brought your work to Weekly Shonen Magazine.
Yes, and Sarigenaku Lupan/The Casual Lupin (the prototype of Magic Kaito) received an honorable mention at Magazine. However, later on the new editor-in-chief Nouchi-san told me that “your drawing style doesn't suit Magazine,” so this time I brought my work to Weekly Shonen Sunday. There, the third piece of work that I submitted, Chotto Mattete (science-fiction romantic comedy), was selected for the Shogakukan Newcomers Award in 1986. That's when I finally managed to debut.
♦ The following year, your first serialized work Magic Kaito started. Things seemed to have gone very well.
My friends and juniors at college helped me out as assistants, and we all went to a sushi restaurant for a celebration when I received my pay for the first chapter. But it was only when the first volume was published that I really felt like I had become a professional manga artist. I was so happy that I added bonus pages and so on, and I really spent a lot of effort on it. And this very first series is still ongoing (laughs). I can almost call it my lifework. In summer, I'd draw a new story. It's about Kaito's mother, Phantom Lady…that's the plan. However, my editor really criticized it rather harshly at first, saying that the mechanisms and romantic-comedy elements will be popular among adults and young girls but not among young boys. I thought “bastard!!”, and went on to draw Yaiba. But this time, it was only popular among young boys (laughs).
♦ Please share with us your memories of Yaiba.
As it was my first weekly serialization, I was so completely absorbed in work that I didn't even bother about my personal appearance. The idea of Yaiba's Thunder God Sword becoming stronger when various balls are added to it was based on RPG games where collecting various items makes a player stronger, and I'm glad that it was well-received. But it turned out to be too childish, so in that sense I think I failed. I liked the final Yamato no Orochi arc. I thought I drew it quite well, but the Orochi arc wasn't included in the anime (laughs). It would be nice to have it animated in today's animation quality.
The temporary name before serialization was "Detective Boy Conan"?!
♦ After Yaiba, it's finally Detective Conan. What kind of image did you have in mind when you created the series?
It was Mikeneko Holmes/Calico Cat Holmes. A cat can't possibly understand the cases, yet it solves them by touching (and thus pointing out) the key pieces of evidence. That's just like Conan. A kid can't possibly understand anything, yet he goes “Ah-re-re~?” Conan was created based on an image of a speaking Mikeneko Holmes.
♦ When you first started, how long did you plan for Conan to last?
I really didn't expect it to last this long. I thought it might end after the first volume. Also, about the name "Conan," initially the editor-in-chief told me to change it to Detective Doyle because there was already an anime called Conan, The Boy in Future (directed by Miyazaki Hayao), but I said “I'd overtake The Boy in Future!” and it finally got through. But the new serialization's announcement said Tantei Shonen Conan/Detective Boy Conan, and I thought no way, this is pretty bad (laughs). However, about 10 years ago, someone from Ghibli said to me, “when you talk about Conan now you'd be referring to the detective,” and I thought “Yes, I did it!”
Studio Ghibli was started by the producers of Conan, The Boy in Future.
♦ Please tell us the five episodes that you like best in Conan.
My favorite is The Shaking Metropolitan Police Headquarters: 12 Million Hostages (episode #304). It seems like this is also the most popular episode among readers. What else? The two-and-a-half-hour special in the anime, The Showdown With The Black Organization: Two Mysteries of the Night of the Full Moon (#345), I guess. The episode where Heiji first appeared, The Murder of the Diplomat (#48, #49)—the scene where Shinichi said “That's wrong…” was quite well-directed in my opinion. I also like the line “There is always… just one and only one truth…” The anime's catchphrase is “There is always only one truth!”, right? That line was written by the anime's scriptwriter, who wrote it at the same time I drew the scene. I was really surprised at the coincidence. I like The Mysterious Passenger (#230, #231) too. Conan's words “Don't run away Haibara… Don't run away… from your own destiny…” left a deep impression on me. Shinichi really chooses his words very carefully. Also, the recentHolmes' Revelation (#616-). Since it's the place Conan has always dreamed of going to, I put a lot of effort into this one. I also personally went to the scene to gather materials.
♦ It seems that you said you would be drawing a London arc soon in an interview in 2003.
Really? It took a really long time then. As I was drawing it, using English turned out to be the most difficult part after all. Setting the stage as Wimbledon was decided right from the start, while Minerva Glass was based on the tennis player Steffi Graf. There's a scene where Conan shouted out to Glass from the audience, saying “I'll help you!”, and that was based on what happened in the 1996 Wimbledon championships. In the semifinals between Graf and Date Kimiko, probably to change the way things were going in the competition, a fan shouted “Steffi, will you marry me?” And Steffi replied jokingly, “How much money do you have?” (Laughs)
♦ How was the trip to London?
Most of the places which appeared in the series are the ones that I went to and took pictures of. The telephone booth where Conan turned back to Shinichi is at the end of the bridge after crossing over from the Big Ben. The drain with the words “The Valley of Fear” in the manga was also really there. Same with the hotel. For the places I didn't go to, I used Google Maps to check them. Ah, does that mean I could have drawn it without going to gather materials in the first place? (Laughs)
♦ It seems that the last chapter of the London arc (included in Volume 72 that is set to be released in June) includes a scene of Shinichi and Ran that you have wanted to draw for a long time.
That scene received a really large response. Linking it to Holmes, who is bad at relationships, and the line “a tough and troublesome case” were all decided beforehand, and it all turned out just as planned.
♦ When alternating between the romantic comedy parts and parts about the battle with the Black Organization, are there any rules or periodic patterns?
I knew this question was coming (laughs). I guess fan letters play a big role. “I wish to read about what happened between Shinichi and Ran when they were young!” or “Please draw a Black Organization arc soon!” Many readers are really looking forward to the Black Organization's story. However, drawing that will be entering a different field and I have to draw it in a hardboiled manner, which is not very easy. But I like the hardboiled parts.

The next climax will be a showdown between Sera and Haibara
♦ Which character do you like drawing?
Haibara, I guess. It seems like she was popular among readers right from her first appearance. She is a character that does what I want to do, and says what I want to say for me. That is also why I use Haibara as the character that says out my comments on the “Conan News Agency” website.

♦ Which character is popular among readers?
Right now, it's the new character Sera Masumi. It seems like she's way in the lead. And her name… well, those who know it will know it. I wonder if it's okay to be so Gundam (laughs). She might be the sister of some important character… (Laughs) I'm already looking forward to seeing who will be voicing her in the anime.
Sera's name sounds like Sayla Mass (Japanese reading: Seira Masu), a character from the very first Gundam series, Mobile Suit Gundam.
♦ We are also interested in how the love between Takagi and Satou will go.
I'm planning to draw the wedding between Takagi and Satou. Actually, I wanted to put their wedding into last year's movie, with Kaitou Kid involved, but if I do it in the movies, I can't have it in the manga, so I gave up on the idea.
♦ Conan has ventured into a variety of media—school manga, anime, movies and live-action dramas. How do you participate in each of these?
I mainly participate in the movies' scripts and some drawings. For the other media, I basically leave it to those in charge.
♦ How were you involved in the latest movie, Detective Conan: Quarter of Silence?
The decision to use the number 15 as the movie's theme (a quarter = 15 minutes) was a consensus between the movie's staff and me. To use snowy mountains as the setting was my suggestion. After being buried by an avalanche, the time limit for one to survive is 15 minutes—I thought this was a good way to fit the theme.
♦ What are the highlights of this year's movie?
The skateboard scene at the tunnel in the first part. That was cool, right? Also, the scene that I drew, where Conan said “Words are like cutlery; if you use them in the wrong way, they can become weapons.” I've also used the line before in the manga, and it's a line that I'm fond of. After being swallowed by the avalanche, in the scene where Ran and Conan pass each other and Shinichi appears, Shinichi's face was also drawn by me.
On the last page of Volume 54, File 8 “The Trick of the Blood Stains”
♦ Among all the Conan movies, which one do you recommend?
The fifth movie, Countdown to Heaven. Various things were nicely put together; it's a piece of work that I'm proud of. My younger brother also said that it was his favorite. My brother's a doctor and an anime otaku (laughs). I often ask him for his opinion, with regards to things like the time of death, the main causes of death and so on. He's like a walking medical dictionary, and it's really convenient! He's also familiar with voice actors and actresses, and he'll call to say things like "Hayashibara-san will be perfect as Haibara's voice actress!" He'll also find fault with me sometimes, saying "You're just resting on your laurels because the series is popular."
♦ It has been 17 years since Conan started serialization and 71 volumes have been published to date. Are there any tricks to maintaining such a long serialization?
No, I'm afraid. On the contrary, every time I draw a case, I get the feeling that it will be the last one. But before I know it, I've already started the next case.
♦ During your long serialization, what were the most difficult parts?
Forgetting about plot developments that I foreshadowed previously (laughs). It was a lot of work to reveal the foreshadowed plot about Vermouth (episode #345). It felt like I had to add in this, that and everything. I had passed the pieces of papers on which I wrote the plot developments to the anime staff, but now I want it back (laughs). If you read those, you might even know who the Boss is.
♦ In an interview with our magazine back in 2008, you mentioned that the next climax will be the Bourbon arc.
The Bourbon arc will still continue. I'm planning a different climax with a showdown between Sera and Haibara. It will be really exciting, since they are both "wolves" (laughs).
♦ We're looking forward to it! We heard that you have already decided the plot for the final chapter, but when will that be?
I'm afraid I don't know. But I don't think I'd surpass Kochi Kame's number of volumes (laughs). I've already decided the lines. The final chapter will be a happy ending. It's by me, after all.

I want to retire at Professor Agasa's age.
♦ You have been drawing weekly serialized manga for 20 years, so how is a weekly cycle like for you?
The storyboard takes about 2.5–3 days, the drawing about 4–4.5 days. I use up the whole week (laughs). There's no time for me to come up with the tricks/mechanisms. That is why it is becoming a little off. Sometimes I get a break from serialization, but I don't get to rest at all. Because besides the manga, I even have to join in movie discussions and provide some drawings (laughs). That is why nobody complains even if I hand up my manuscript just on time. I have never missed a single deadline, because it feels like if I miss one, I'd just keep missing the rest.
♦ If you get to take a break, what would you like to do?
Sleep. Get one long, good sleep. Get up for a little while, watch a movie, and go back to sleep again (laughs). That's my dream life. And I want to try living in a hotel too…
♦ How often do you return to your hometown?
I go back every year during the New Year (celebrated in January in Japan), because many fans will come with shikishi (special cardboards used for autographs) asking for my autograph. Moreover, my parents will bring me the shikishi that they have received over the past year (laughs). About 200 pieces of the photocopied type, and about 20 pieces of the normal shikishi. But well, once I go back to the countryside I have nothing much to do, so I'd feel like drawing again.
♦ It seems like you really love your job.
Really? Come to think of it, the dramas I watch are all police dramas. Recently, I'd record all the new television programs and delete anything that is not a police or mystery drama. I'd play them while I draw up my drafts, because if it's a drama with dialogue, I can follow the story even when I'm doing work. Recently, I watched SPEC. Even though people with supernatural powers appear in the show, the mystery element is retained. In the last episode, in the battle of wits between Touma (played by Toda Erika) and Ninomae (played by Kamiki Ryunosuke), the part where Touma won and said “I win!” was really cool! If Toda-san was still a teenager, I would have liked to have her play Ran in the live-action Conan.
♦ On New Year's Day this year, you played the role of a forensic investigator in Aibou.
Getting the chance to chat with Mizutani Yutaka-san really fulfilled a long-time wish of mine. He's really nice, and is exactly like Ukyou (the character that Mizutani Yutaka plays in Aibou).

♦ Would you be interested in writing scripts for dramas?
After I retire, I don't mind trying it. But hasn't it been said that I can't make it if I don't draw? (Laughs)
♦ What do you view as important when drawing manga?
Guys have to be cool, while girls have to be cute and pretty. But lately, I have drawn many cool girls like Ran and Sera (laughs).
♦ This will be the 25th year in your career as a manga artist. How was this past quarter of a century?
Half of it was used for Conan. I feel like I want my life back (laughs). When I started, I was only 29. Time really flies. In my head, it feels like only about 4 years has passed.
♦ Until what age would you like to continue this job?
As long as I can, I guess. I thought about retiring at Professor Agasa's age (53 years old), but when I retire, I'd probably feel like drawing manga again. It's also a problem that my assistants who have been with me from the start are getting old too. But I'd be like Chaplin and say “My masterpiece will be my next piece of work.”
♦ For your next series, how about Saiyuki, which you mentioned in the interview with us in 2008?
I really want to draw Saiyuki! I've already completed Son Goku's character design, and the one-shot was set to be published in Shonen Sunday, but it is too much work to draw the background images of ancient China, so it's probably not going to be done. Since I probably won't draw it, I'd say this—it's really interesting (laughs).
♦ Please draw it! Lastly, please leave a message for our readers.

Detective Conan OVA 11: Haibara Ai’s Past

As with previous years, an original video animation (OVA) of Detective Conan will be released this year.

OVA 11 is titled “A Secret Order From London” and talks about Haibara Ai’s past, of which not much is known. Apparently, it will reveal a secret about Ai when she was still a girl. Besides Conan and the Detective Kids, Okiya Subaru will also be featured.

To purchase this OVA, you will need to make an order using a form found in Weekly Shonen Sunday. The deadline for orders is June 23, 2011.

Detective Conan’s 15th Movie Opens At Number One

Detective Conan’s 15th movie, Quarter of Silence, opened at number one in Japanese theaters over the past weekend, from April 16-17, 2011.

According to Kogyo Tsushinsha, three new films that opened over the past weekend topped the box office charts of Japan. Among them, Detective Conan: Quarter of Silence emerged first, while Crayon Shin Chan 2011 took second place, followed by Gulliver’s Travels.
As with previous years, a Magic File, an original video animation (OVA) that contains a side story to the movie, will be released. Magic File 2011 is titled “Niigata~Tokyo The Presents Capriccio,” and talks about what happens the day after the story in the movie ends. Hattori Heiji, who did not appear in the movie, will be featured in this side story.

Magic File 2011 is now on sale at all 7-eleven stores in Japan.

Detective Conan’s 38th ending theme song is a song from Breakerz, entitled “Tsukiyo no Itazura no Mahou” or “Mischievous Magic On The Moonlit Night.”

The song is from Breakerz’s 10th single, “Tsukiyo no Itazura no Mahou / Climber x Climber,” which will be released on April 27, 2011. The exact date of when this new ending theme song will be used in the anime has not been announced yet. This will be the third time a Breakerz song is used for the Detective Conan anime.

Aoyama Gosho Says “No Problem”

As many of us have probably heard from the news, a huge earthquake followed by a devastating tsunami struck Japan on Friday, March 11. Many anime airing schedules have been disrupted, including this week’s Detective Conan episode (#609), which was scheduled to air on March 12.

Fortunately, the safety of Detective Conan’s author, Aoyama Gosho, has been confirmed. Aoyama has left a message through Edogawa Conan’s official Twitter account:

A message from Aoyama-sensei! “It shook pretty badly at my studio, but no problem! I managed to get my manuscript done on time. (lol) P.S. The new character’s name is Sera! He’ll be a pretty important character, so be sure to look out for him ♪”
青山先生からの伝言だよ！　「結構仕事場揺れたけど、ノープロブレム！ちゃんと締め切り前に原稿上げたよ(笑)　P.S.新キャラの名前は、『世良』！かなり重要なキャラなので、みんなよろしくねん♪」

Detective Conan 2011 Live-Action Special Stars New Cast (dcfc)

To celebrate the Detective Conan anime and movies’ 15th anniversary, many special events have been lined up for the year 2011 as part of Detective Conan’s 15th Anniversary Special Project.

First, as dcfc has previously reported, a new live-action TV special is set to be broadcast this spring, according to this week’s Weekly Shonen Sunday (Volume 11). Nearly five years after the last live-action TV special was aired, this third live-action adaptation of the Detective Conan series will have a new cast, starring 22-year-old Mizobata Junpei as Kudou Shinichi and 19-year-old Kutsuna Shiori as Mouri Ran. The story is set in a secluded village that is ruled by the legend of a mysterious bird, and is set to have taken place 100 days before Shinichi turned into Conan.

Other events include the third Conan quiz which will start on Mar 5, a chance for fans to vote for their favorite Detective Conan episodes (only for those living in Japan), the opening up of the 15th movie’s post-recording scene to a selected number of fans, and the release of a new version of Gosho Aoyama’s Collection of Short Stories that includes the Detective Conan author’s 2007 one-shot Tell Me A Lie.

Finally, the guest for this year’s Detective Conan movie is war photographer and TV personality Watanabe Youichi. In his interview with Weekly Shonen Sunday, he says that he feels honored to be able to participate in the 15th Detective Conan movie and will do his best in his first voice acting role. His role in the movie is yet to be announced.

Mizobata Junpei to Play “Kudo Shinichi” for Detective Conan’s Special Drama

Actor Mizobata Junpei will star in a special drama for the live-action of “Detective Conan (Case Closed)” which will be aired in April.

There have been two special dramas for the live-action versions of “Detective Conan” in 2006 and 2007, and Oguri Shun played the main character, Kudo Shinichi, both times. However, this time around, Mizobata is taking over the role, and the heroine, Mouri Ran, which was played by Kurokawa Tomoka in the previous broadcasts, will now be taken over by Kutsuna Shiori.

“Detective Conan” is a popular manga written by Aoyama Gosho, and it has been adapted to anime since 1996. This special drama will be broadcasted as the 15th year anniversary for the anime adaption and its 15th film release, and the story of the drama will be completely original.
Mizobata commented, “I’m the generation who grew up watching the anime. When I first received the offer, I felt pressure, but I was very happy at the same time.”
The shoot for the special drama will start at the end of February.

A new Detective Conan live-action TV special has been announced!

The year 2011 marks the 15th anniversary for both the Detective Conan anime and its movies. In line with this special occasion, many events have been lined up for 2011. According to this week’s Weekly Shonen Sunday magazine (Volume 10), these events include a new live-action TV special. This week’s magazine also comes with a set of stickers with Aoyama Gosho’s original illustrations for past years’s movie posters:

There have been two live-action TV specials for Detective Conan, starring Oguri Shun as Kudou Shinichi and Kurokawa Tomoka as Mouri Ran. The first special, entitled “Detective Conan: A Challenge to Kudou Shinichi,” was a prequel to the start of the series and aired in 2006 to celebrate the anime’s 10th anniversary. The second special, entitled “Kudou Shinichi Returns! The Showdown With The Black Organization,” aired in 2007 and included more characters, such as members of the Black Organization.

The official Weekly Shonen Sunday website has announced that more details of special events lined up for the 15th anniversary of Detective Conan will be published in its next issue, Volume 11, which will be on sale from February 9, 2011. This year's 10th volume ofShogakukan's Weekly Shonen Sundaymagazine is announcing on Wednesday that production on a new live-actionDetective Conan special has been green-lit. The special is part of the 15th anniversary celebration of the television anime series. More details will be in the next volume of the magazine on February 9.

The first live-action Detective Conan television special with Shun Oguri in the title role aired in 2006 as part of the anime's 10th anniversary. A second special aired the following year.

World Hobby Fair 2011 Winter

The 2011 Winter World Hobby Fair (WHF) took place over the past weekend on January 16, 2011 in Osaka, Japan.

The WHF is a bi-annual event held in Japan and features the latest in manga, anime and games. It is co-organized by Shogakukan, the publisher of Weekly Shonen Sunday (the weekly magazine on which Detective Conan is serialized), and is open to the public for free. At the end of the month, the cosplay outfit store chain Cospa will begin selling three new Detective Conan (Case Closed) T-shirts, including a Black Organization (Kuro-Zukume no Soshiki) one that doubles as a face mask of the manga's antagonists. The Black Organization T-shirt simply has the name of the international criminal organization from Gosho Aoyama's manga and anime printed in Japanese on the front. However, if the wearer pulls the shirt over his or her head, the inside of the shirt reveals the silhouette of one of the manga's mysterious foes as a disguise.

The other two shirts have "Mitame wa Kodomo! Zunō wa Otona!" ("The looks of a child! The brains of an adult!") or "Baarō" (Conan's catchphrase shortening of "baka yarō" or "idiot") printed on them. Although the shirts officially go on sale at the end of the month, people can buy them early at the Jisedai World Hobby Fair '11 Winter event, which runs in multiple Japanese cities from January 16 to February 6.

Interestingly, the new opening theme song video actually includes an animated version of the actual singer’s dance. While the Detective Conan anime has traditionally been used to bring many new singers to fame, this is probably the first time an animated sequence of an actual singer’s dance has been included.

Aoyama’s Appearance In Aibou

dcfc previously reported that Detective Conan’s author, Aoyama Gosho, will play a forensic specialist in popular Japanese drama Aibou’s New Year’s Day special episode. Here are screenshots of the episode (click to view larger images):

Aoyama appears at around 8 minutes into the show, and his appearance lasts for slightly less than a minute.

Aibou’s producer Itou Hitoshi made a blog entry yesterday about Aoyama’s special involvement in this episode. According to Itou, when Aoyama came to visit the set, director Izumi Seiji personally made an offer to cast him in the show, and Aoyama readily accepted it. Aoyama’s Acting Debut in “Aibou”; Conan’s 2011 New Year Greetings

Detective Conan’s author, Aoyama Gosho, is making his acting debut!

As many fans probably know, Aoyama Gosho frequently visits different places to gather ideas and background information for his manga series Detective Conan. This time, it appears that while gathering information on the set of TV Asahi’s popular drama “Aibou”, Aoyama spoke to the staff and eventually decided to make his acting debut. He plays a forensic identification specialist in the New Year’s Day special episode of the series, which will air at 9:00pm on Jan 1, 2011.

Interestingly, Aoyama Gosho and Mizutani Yutaka, who plays the protagonist
Sugishita Ukyou in “Aibou”, are both fans of each other’s works. Mizutani states that he has the full seventy-volume collection of the Detective Conan manga, while Aoyama drew the character Sugishita Ukyou in Volume 48 of the manga:

The 30th opening theme song of the Detective Conan anime, entitled “tear drops”, is a song from the debut single of a new five-member all-girls group, Caos Caos Caos. The song will be used in the anime from 8th Jan 2011, while the single will be released on 23rd February 2011.

Hundred Percent Free’s new single “Juugoya Crisis ~Kimi ni Aitai~”, or “Fifteenth Night Crisis ~I Miss You~”, will be the 37th ending theme song of the Detective Conan anime. The single will be released on 26th Jan 2011, while the song will be used in the anime from 08th Jan 2011.

The 15th Detective Conan movie has been revealed!

A poster of the 15th Detective Conan movie, Quarter of Silence, was bundled with this week’s Weekly Shonen Sunday magazine:

The tagline of the 15th movie is “We will survive, definitely…” This time, Shizuno Koubun will be directing the movie while Yamamoto Yasuichirou, who directed the 8th to 14th Detective Conan movies, will act as the chief director. Not coincidentally, the 15th Detective Conan movie installment’s Japanese title literally translates to “15 minutes of silence.”

Detective Conan: Quarter of Silence Revealed, New Precure Teaser

The official website for the anime films based on Gosho Aoyama's Detective Conan manga has confirmed that the 15th film, Detective Conan: Quarter of Silence, will open in Japan on April 16, 2011. The story begins with a threat against the Tokyo governor, but Conan's quick thinking prevents any fatalities when a subway tunnel is blown up. Conan learns there may be a connection to a village that was relocated for the construction of a dam, and he races to stop the criminal before the next attack.
The website is streaming a teaser trailer. (In the linked page, select the "Trailer 特報" button on the bottom.) The Detective Conan anime franchise is celebrating its 15th anniversary.
Toei Animation began streaming the second teaser trailer for the Eiga Precure All-Stars DX3 Mirai ni Todoke! Sekai o Tsunagu Niji-Iro no Hana (Precure All-Stars DX3: Deliver the Future! The Rainbow-Colored Flower That Connects the World) film. (In the linked page, select the "特報2" button on the right.)
Like the two previous Precure All-Stars DX magical girl films, the new film will combine the casts of all the Pretty Cure (Precure) television series to date. This 10th Precure film will open in Japan on March 19, 2011.

Detective Conan Anime & Movies: 15th Year Anniversary

The Detective Conan anime and movies celebrate their 15th year anniversary next year!

The first episode of Detective Conan aired on 08 January 1996. In the blink of an eye, the Detective Conan anime is now approaching its 15th year of airing. Similarly, the 15th Detective Conan movie will open next year. Hence, 2011 will be the 15th year anniversary for both the television anime and the Detective Conan movies.

To celebrate this occasion, a special Detective Conan website has been set up. The website (in Japanese only) contains congratulatory messages from celebrities and a list of recommended episodes chosen by the main characters’s voice actors and actresses. In addition, a series of six videos entitled “Conan vs. Suwacchi Special Talk” will be available on the website. The videos will be added one per week on Saturdays. The first video showed an interview with Suwacchi (Suwa Michihiko), the chief producer of the Detective Conan anime, and a puppet Conan:

Besides the special website, previously aired episodes of Detective Conan will also be available on online Japanese video sites. While the first episode is available for free, the other episodes are priced from 336-420 yen in sets of four episodes each. Detective Conan’s Author Draws Popular Character From “Black Lagoon” [Updated!]

Detective Conan’s author Aoyama Gosho draws Revy, a main character of the series Black Lagoon.

Black Lagoon is serialized in Sunday GX, a monthly manga magazine published by Shogakukan, which also publishes Shonen Sunday (the magazine that serializes Detective Conan). In accordance with the 10th year anniversary of Sunday GX, a special collaboration has been made between the author of Detective Conan and Black Lagoon. Aoyama’s drawing of Revy, Black Lagoon’s highly popular character, will be bundled as a poster with the October issue of Sunday GX.

Detective Conan ED #36 “Tomorrow is the last Time”

The 36th ending theme song of the Detective Conan anime will be Kuraki Mai’s new song “Tomorrow is the last Time”, which will be used from 18th September 2010.

The song is included in Kuraki Mai’s upcoming 9th album, “FUTURE KISS”, which will be released on 20th October 2010.

Singer Rina Aiuchi to Retire

30-year-old cites health as partial reason; also sang on MÄR, Monster Rancher, others

30-year-old singer Rina Aiuchi unexpectedly announced on Friday that she will be retiring from the entertainment world. Aiuchi delivered the news during a fan club-only concert in Osaka and said that she has decided to retire partly because of her health, with which she has experienced problems in the past. She plans to end her musical career with a concert at Amagasaki City in Hyōgo Prefecture on September 26. Her last album, appropriately titled Last Scene, will ship on September 15.

Aiuchi was born in Osaka on July 31, 1980, and she made her professional singing debut in 2000. She performed various songs for the Detective Conan (Case Closed) television anime series and movies, as well as MÄR, Monster Rancher, and other television anime series.

New Shinichi & Ran Statues In Aoyama’s Hometown

Two new bronze statues of Shinichi and Ran have been created in Gosho Aoyama’s hometown.

Born in Hokuei town in Japan’s Tottori prefecture, Gosho Aoyama (47) has made a name for himself as a manga artist, with his most notable work being the Detective Conan series. On 20th July 2010, two new bronze statues of main characters Shinichi & Ran, a reproduction of a scene from the start of Detective Conan, were officially unveiled in the open space near the Gosho Aoyama Manga Factory, a museum in Aoyama’s hometown that celebrates his success.

The statue of Shinichi has a height of 130cm while the statue of Ran has a height of 120cm. Both statues cost a total of 6 million yen, or about 60,000 USD, to produce. The statues were based on a scene from volume 01 of the Detective Conan manga, where Shinichi talks about his dream of becoming a detective to Ran. The maker of the statues therefore hopes that this can become a place where young fans of the series gather and talk about their own dreams and ambitions.

Shōnen Sunday celebrates its 3000th issue this week!

Started in 1959, Weekly Shōnen Sunday, the weekly shōnen manga magazine published by Shogakukan, has finally reached its 3000th issue! The Detective Conan manga has been serialized in Shōnen Sunday since 1994, and File 741 will be published on 14th July 2010 in the 3000th issue of the popular magazine.

To celebrate its 3000th issue, Shōnen Sunday will be giving out the following gifts to its readers:

Places where Tweets come from will vary between “Mōri Detective Agency”, “Teitan Elementary School”, “Agasa’s Residence” and the like. Occasionally, “secret tweets” which reveal hints about the Detective Conan manga’s storyline will also be tweeted. (Editor’s note: We’ll put up the news of such “secret tweets” if we see any!)

A special collection of comments from all of Shōnen Sunday’s current manga authors, aptly named “The Authors’ Tweets”, is also included in the 3000th issue of Shōnen Sunday. Gosho Aoyama’s line is: “When it’s issue number 4000, will I still be alive? (laughs)” (“4000号のとき、俺、生きてるかなぁ（笑）”). Considering the fact that Aoyama is 47 this year and the 4000th issue will be published about 20 years later, let’s hope for the best!

Aoyama Gosho Draws Conan In France

Where did Gosho Aoyama, the author of Detective Conan, go to during his recent two-week break?

Yes, you guessed it, he went to France. On 6th July 2010, Gosho Aoyama went to support Japanese road bicycle racer Arashiro Yukiya in the 3rd stage of Tour de France, which spans 213 kilometers from Wanze (Belgium) to Arenberg (France). While the race was expectably a tedious one, Aoyama’s visit definitely seemed to have brightened up Arashiro’s day.

The next day, on 7th July, Aoyama attended a Detective Conan fan-meeting event named “Dedicace Gosho Aoyama”. The following video is a live recording of Aoyama drawing a portrait of Conan, and its title translates to “Dedication by Gosho Aoyama – Kana (Hall of Fnac – July 2010)”. (Kana is a French manga publisher and Hall of Fnac is the place where the event was held.)

While the chapter published right after his break, File 741, does not seem to contain any content related to his recent trip to France, we might just see some French-related content soon!

Det. Conan Anime Cited in Korean Teen Killing's Aftermath

The police in Seoul accused a gang of five teenaged dropouts of killing a fellow 15-year-old female gang member on June 12, and a boyfriend of one of the gang members allegedly suggested that they drain the body's blood to make disposal easier, in a manner inspired by the Detective Conan (Case Closed) anime. According to the police, the gang had kidnapped the victim, Kim Jeong, for four days before unintentionally killing her. The suspects' reported motive was the victim's gossip about the male gang leader's "very bad behavior." All of the suspects except the 19-year-old boyfriend (identified only by his family name Lee) are 15 years old.

Two English reports described the blood-draining's source of inspiration as manga, but Korean reports say the source was the Detective Conan anime which Lee had seen when he was in junior high school. (In the Korean language, the words for "anime" and "manga" are related.) In particular, the British website Metro included an image of an unrelated Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Tsumihoroboshi-hen manga volume in its article.

14th Detective Conan film, 18th Crayon Shin-chan film to both open on April 17

The official website for the anime films based on Gosho Aoyama's Detective Conan manga has begun streaming the second 30-second teaser trailer and the full 95-second trailer for Detective Conan: The Lost Ship in The Sky on Saturday. Conan, a brilliant detective trapped in a child's body, will face his rival Kid the Phantom Thief (Kaitō Kid) in the new film. The 14th film in the franchise will open in Japan on April 17.
Not coincidentally, the Animax anime channel has scheduled a Magic Kaito television program on the movie's opening day, and there are retail listings for a Detective Conan x Magic Kaito manga volume at the end of this month. In the film's story, Kid has his eyes set on the "Lady of the Sky" jewel aboard Bell 3, the largest airship in the world. However, a mysterious terrorist group called Red Shamu-neko has hijacked the airship itself, along with Conan and his allies Kogoro and Ran. This is the first film in which Rikiya Koyama replaces Akira Kamiya as the voice of the character Kogoro Mouri after Kamiya left the role in September
This year's Detective Conan: The Raven Chaser film set the franchise record for attendance and earned over 3.4 billion yen (about US$35 million). The first 12 films were seen over 25 million times in theaters. Viz Media is releasing the original manga in North America under the name Case Closed, and FUNimation shipped DVDs for the television anime adaptation and some of the earlier films.

The website for the 18th Crayon Shin-chan anime film, Crayon Shin-chan: Chō Jikū! Arashi o Yobu Ora no Hanayome, has also begun streaming its second 30-second teaser trailer and full 100-second trailer on Saturday. For the first time in the series, the film will depict the future of the title character and his previously unseen bride, Tamiko. The film will open on April 17.
The publisher Futabasha revealed plans for a manga "sequel" to the original Crayon Shin-chan four-panel comedy manga this summer, even though the creator, Yoshito Usui, passed away in September. The television anime series version has also continued after Usui's passing.

The official website for the anime films based on Gosho Aoyama's Detective Conan manga has announced that the 14th film, Detective Conan: The Lost Ship in The Sky, will open in Japan on April 17. Rikiya Koyama to Voice Detective Conan's Kogoro Mouri

Akira Kamiya replaced after 13 years; Yamato, Aki Sora's casts also updated

The official website for Shogakukan's Weekly Shonen Sunday magazine serialization of Gosho Aoyama's Detective Conan (Case Closed) manga has revealed that Rikiya Koyama will replace Akira Kamiya as the voice of Kogoro Mouri in the anime.

Kamiya had announced on his official blog on September 18 that he would no longer play this major role in the television series. Kamiya had played the character of Kogoro — the character Ran's father and the private investigator who deals with the pint-sized Detective Conan — since the anime launched in 1996.

Update: In related news, Noriko Yume has replaced the original voice actress of the heroine Yuki Kodai, Youko Asagami, in the Uchuu Senkan Yamato Fukkatsu-hen revival of the Space Battleship Yamato space opera franchise. Author and Tokyo Governor Shintaro Ishihara (Season of the Sun) is credited with the story.

Akita Shoten has posted a website with an updated cast list for the anime adaptation of Masahiro Itosugi's Aki Sora "line-crossing" manga. Shiho Kawaragi and Sayaka Kinoshita will play Aki and Sora respectively, replacing Eri Kitamura and Asami Imai from the drama CD's cast. Kana Ueda and Tae Okajima will play Nami and Kana, respectively.

Veteran voice actor apologizes to fans, creator, cast members, staff

Veteran voice actor Akira Kamiya has announced on his official blog on Friday morning that he will no longer play the major role of Kogoro Mouri in theDetective Conan (Case Closed) anime series. He said that he cannot discuss the reasons and other details, but humbly acknowledged fault in this situation.

Kamiya then offered his apologies to all of the fans for this turn of fortune. He also offered his apologies to the manga creator Gosho Aoyama, lead voice actress Minami Takayama (Conan Edogawa), voice actress Wakana Yamazaki (Ran Mouri), voice actorKenichi Ogata (Hiroshi Agasa), the other members of the cast, the staff of APU Studio, the YTV network, and the publisher Shogakukan. Kamiya has played the character of Kogoro, the private investigator who deals with the pint-sized Detective Conan and the father of Ran, since the anime launched in 1996.

Funimation Licenses 4 More Detective Conan Movies

Last Magician of the Century, Captured In Her Eyes, Count Down to Heaven, Phantom of Baker Street

The North American anime distributor Funimation is announcing at the Otakon convention in Baltimore today that it has licensed four of TMS Entertainment's Detective Conan films. The films are: Detective Conan: The Last Magician of the Century (1999), Detective Conan: Captured In Her Eyes (2000), Detective Conan: Count Down to Heaven (2001), and Detective Conan: The Phantom of Baker Street (2002). All four films are based on the main character from Gosho Aoyama's Detective Conan manga — a prodigy detective trapped in a seven-year-old's body.

Funimation will begin releasing the movies individually this winter. Viz Media has been releasing the manga in North America under the name Case Closed. Fates resolved after news show replaces anime in coveted "golden time" slot

The official website for the anime adaptation of Gosho Aoyama's Detective Conan manga has announced on Monday that the television series will move from Mondays at 7:00 p.m. to Saturdays at 6:00 p.m. on April 4. The Yattermananime remake is also moving from Mondays at 7:30 p.m. to Sundays at 7:00 a.m.

Newspapers had reported in December that the Japanese broadcaster NTV would be launching an hour-long weekday news program at Conan and Yatterman's current timeslot. However, NTV's network of affiliates had been silent about the fate of Conan and Yatterman until now. Japanese fans had launched an online petition with over 1,200 entriescalling for Detective Conan to continue.

The schedule changes effectively end "Anime 7," the brand created to promote the back-to-back showings of Detective Conan and Yatterman in Japanese television's "golden time" slots in the evening. Keisuke Iwata, the head of rival TV Tokyo's AT-X animation channel and animation division,noted in his Wednesday lecture that many anime can no longer broadcast in "golden time" slots on key stations due to falling ratings.

Viz Media is releasing the original manga in North America under the name Case Closed, and FUNimation Entertainmentshipped DVDs for the television anime adaptation. Takashi Miike's live-action film adaptation of Yatterman will open in Japan on March 7, while the next Detective Conan film,Meitantei Conan: Shikkoku no Chaser (Detective Conan: The Raven Chaser), will open in April.

13th film in manga-based anime franchise to open in Japan on April 18

The official website for the Detective Conan anime franchise's films has posted a teaser trailer for the 13th film, Meitantei Conan: Shikkoku no Chaser (Detective Conan: The Raven Chaser), on Saturday. Like the previous films and the ongoing television series, this film adapts Gosho Aoyama's popular shōnen manga about a brilliant detective trapped in a child's body. Detective Shinichi Kudo will once again face the elusive Kuro-zukume (Men in Black) for their "fated showdown." The film will open on April 18, 2009.

Viz Media is releasing the original manga in North America under the name Case Closed, and FUNimation Entertainment shipped DVDs for the television anime adaptation.

Detective Conan Statues Damaged by Unknown Assailant

The Sports Nippon newspaper reports that the citizens of Japan's Hokuei discovered on the morning of May 10 that two of the town's bronze statues of Detective Conan had been damaged. The magnifying glass on one and the snorkel of another had been bent. The town in Tottori Prefecture had erected the 60-centimeter (two-feet) tall statues on both ends of its Conan Bridge in honor of its most famous son, Conan manga author Gosho Aoyama. There were seven unsolved cases of damage on the Conan statues in 2005. The town opened the nearby Gosho Aoyama Manga Factory museum on March 8.
